About the family
Norvik Flex started as a commission for a Dutch regional daily that wanted one family for everything it prints: the ticker along the bottom of the web page, the captions under photographs, and the front page headline. We drew the narrowest and widest masters first, then filled the space between them so the paper could pick any width without losing its voice.
Why the width axis matters
A headline that has to fit a fixed column no longer needs a smaller size or a rewrite. The subeditor pulls the width axis in until it fits, and the weight and x-height stay where they were. The optical size axis does the same job for small print, opening the spacing and sturdying the thin strokes below 12 point.
